Future Lab 1.0
Album
During the Future Lab workshop week our studio served as a laboratory for developing props and costumes. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
We had all received black overalls in the beginning of the week and we were tuning these and developing also headpieces and other objects. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
This headpiece, which was made of a welding mask, was for the two characters who were reading 'letters from the future'. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The characters got also suits matching the headpiece. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The biggest prop that we built was a vehicle that would provide maintenance for the humans of the future. Here is the early structure: electric wheelchair bottom with a bistro chair. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The maintenance vehicle got also two trailers. The first was a fresh air tank, which contained plants. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The trailer had a lightweight structure and a coupling with the car, so it could be disconnected. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Here you can see the mask, which provides the fresh air. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Here's a sketch of the second trailer, which focused on providing energy. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The energy-providing trailer contained two plasma balls as 'energy sources'. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Energy was charged using color-coded particles, which could be charged with different voltages. The headpieces provided a storage sieve for the energy particles. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The car was finalised by making a transparent half-sphere for the pilot. Here a mount is being made for the half-sphere. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Almost everything is in place. Niklas doing the last checks - the kids built the car otherwise pretty independently. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
After extensive brainstorming the name of the car became Umpel 3000. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The joystick of the car was mounted sturdily on the side of the driver's seat. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
First test drive in the nearby park, which is between our studio and the theatre. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The dress rehearsal for the performance. The performance started with an entrance choreography and a welcome speech in a future language. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Guides with differently coloured wands led the audience from one station to another during the performance. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Here's a station where the letters from the future are being read. The letters were all written by the kids. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
This is the energy-charging station, where people were first scanned in order to know how much energy they need to charge. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
There was also a clairvoyant who told the audience about their future. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Here is a cyborg research station, where people whose mobile phone has grown into their hand are being studied. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The final task in the performance was to bury a time-capsule in the park that would contain wishes from today's people. The wishes could be written on overhead projector sheets. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Getting ready to transport the time capsule. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
Driving through the crowds was a demanding task. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The time capsule is headed to its destination. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
On the way there were some mysterious characters with glowing test tubes. / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
The burial of the time capsule. We have marked the location and will look into the capsule in ten years! / CC BY Niklas Roy & Kati Hyyppä
