Creature Party

Berlin / 2017

Creature Party is an online archive of my doodles, namely creatures that like to hang out together. I have enjoyed doodling for as long as I can remember. It calms my mind and puts me in a good mood. No matter what I try to draw, whether it’s a coffee cup, a hammer or an ice cream, it turns into a creature. Actually a whole bunch of them, each outlined with a black fineliner.

I don’t know whether these moody characters emerge, but they seem to have a life of their own and it felt sad to resign them to a dull life locked away in a drawer. Creature Party was born out of this desire to save the little characters from such a miserable fate. Who knows, maybe they can put someone else in a good mood too!

The characters are downloadable and usable under the self-invented Be Nice License (BNL 1.0). I’ve used openly licensed content, such as Creative Commons licensed images and sounds already quite a while, and like to publish also my documentation under an open license. For this project, I just couldn’t resist coming up with my own license, which is mainly a statement of the things that I find important.

Creature Party  is my free-time project and I extend it during quiet evenings – so more creatures shall accumulate. The website was made by my friend Katrin (a.k.a polynr.) and my synthesizer-virtuosic brother Tomi made all the funky sounds. I’m very grateful to both of them!

Special thanks to my parents who tolerated my numerous imaginary friends in the late 70s. I also want to thank Niklas, Mila, Kaisa, Till and other friends who have shared with me the joy of little characters over the years.
